When you paper a room, there is no reason not to get the perfect job you envisioned when you bought the wallcovering. Yet many people end up with bubbles, seam splits, edge curling, gapping at top or bottom, or background colors showing through. At redecorating time, they discover they cannot remove even "strippable" paper without damage to the facing paper of drywall. Such disappointments can be avoided by proper surface preparation. On previously decorated surfaces, making sure that the wall is clean is not enough. Porous surfaces, glossy surfaces and old wallcoverings - especially vinyls and foils - all present different problems. If new drywall is involved, the facing paper must be protected so it will not be pulled off when you remove "strippable" wallcoverings at some later date. Until now, the only surface treatment prior to hanging wallcoverings recommended by wallcovering manufacturers was: (1) Prime with oil-base primer. (2) Let dry overnight. (3) Apply wall size. (4) Allow size to dry. With all the drying time, mess and effort, it's no wonder many do-it-yourself decorators shied away from wallcovering or took a chance by skipping surface preparation, often ending up with a botched job. SHIELDZ Universal Wallcovering Primer, a white pigmented water-based primer, was developed as an easy-to-use replacement for oil-based primers. It's the one-step product that can be used whenever wallcoverings are to be hung.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and in good condition, free
of wax, loose paint, grease, old wallcovering adhesive, mold and
mildew, and other residue. Inspect the surface for paint bonding,
loose wallcoverings, damaged wallboard or plaster. Remove old
or loose wallcovering and residual wallcovering adhesive with
DIF Wallpaper Stripper. Repair unsound surfaces. Seal loose
paint or damaged drywall and fully cured skim coats with Gardz
High Performance Sealer as needed.

WARNING!
If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE
TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS,
SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-Approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.

New Drywall
New drywall must be wiped down with a damp cloth to
remove dust prior to priming. If it is necessary to remove
newly installed fabric-backed vinyl wallcovering, wait 21
days or until wallcovering adhesive is fully cured.

Glossy Surfaces
Glossy paint, paneling, existing wallcovering, glass, plastic,
etc. should be primed with ShieldZ Universal prior to
wallcovering installation.

Metal Surfaces
Prime with rust-inhibitive Bulls-Eye 1-2-3 Primer.

Existing Wallcovering
Remove whenever possible. Use ShieldZ Universal to
prime over non-removable wallcovering. Old porous or
metallic wallpaper should be removed or sealed with B-I-N
Primer before applying ShieldZ Universal.

Plaster
New plaster must age at least 90 days before application
of ShieldZ Universal.

MIXING
Mix thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed. DO NOT THIN.

APPLICATION
Apply only when air, material, and surface temperatures
are between 50-100ºF (10-38ºC) and the relative humidity
is or less than 85%. Apply with a brush, roller, or airless
sprayer with a 0.017 tip at 2,000-2,500 psi for optimum
spread rate. Cut in entire surface using a brush at the
corners, edges, and openings. Close container tightly after
each use.

COLOR/TINTING
ShieldZ Universal Wallcovering Primer may be tinted to
medium tone colors to match the background color of
wallcovering to hide seams and gaps.
Use a maximum of 4 oz. of universal tinting color per gallon. If
a dark color is needed, use ShieldZ Clear Wall Size.

CLEAN-UP
Clean up all tools and spots immediately with warm water.
