Cabot Bleaching Stain is uniquely formulated to accelerate the natural weathering process of uncoated exterior wood. It contains a small amount of gray pigment and a chemical ingredient that actually bleaches the wood's surface.

When first applied, this product gives a delicate gray tone, and during the first few months' exposure it gradually turns into a beautiful, natural driftwood gray color. This weathered effect, if derived by nature, would require many years of harsh exposure, which often turns wood dark and uneven in appearance.

Cabot Bleaching Stain produces a self-protecting finish and achieves a uniform weathered look in only 3 to 6 months. Use on new or reconditioned exterior wood siding, shingles and shakes.

Coverage
Approximately 300–400 sq. ft. (33–42 m2) per gallon.

Where to Use
Cabot Bleaching Stain is for use on new exterior wood that has not been previously treated. It can also be applied to wood previously treated with Cabot Bleaching Oil. It is an ideal finish for siding, shingles, shakes, fences, and railings and can be used on almost any type of uncoated lumber, such as cedar, fir, pine, spruce, cypress and redwood.

Preparing Your Surfaces
Proper surface preparation is the key to maximum stain performance. The durability of this product can be impaired by an unsound or poorly prepared surface. It is very important that the surface be clean of all dirt, mildew stains, loose wood fibers and other foreign matter. In order to be effective, a stain must be able to penetrate. Surfaces must be structurally sound and absolutely dry. (Moisture content must be below 15%, or wood must be exposed to dry weather a minimum of 3 to 5 days.) Weathered wood surfaces must be either sanded, scrubbed with a detergent solution or Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Cleaner and a stiff bristle brush, or power washed to remove the surface layer of all loose wood fibers, dirt, mildew stains, chalky residue and other foreign matter. Use Cabot Problem-Solver Strippers (8004 & 8005) to safely remove all stains and paints from wood surfaces. Use Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Brightener to easily remove nail and metal rust stains, and renew the wood's appearance. New smooth wood that is unseasoned or appears shiny should be allowed to weather sufficiently before staining, but generally no longer than three months.

Application
Apply evenly with a brush or spray. Best results can be obtained by using a high-quality, natural bristle brush. If you must spray, always backbrush immediately after each section is coated to ensure proper penetration.

Cleanup and Disposal
Clean brushes and equipment with mineral spirits. Dispose of empty cans or unused portion in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Close container when not in use. Soak oily rags, lambswool, steel wool, cloths or any other material in water after use to avoid spontaneous combustion. Danger: Rags, steel wood or waste soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after each use, place rags, steel wool or waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
