An asphalt coating is different from aged asphalt. Aged asphalt refers to Built-Up Roofing (BUR), made up asphalt felts mopped to the roof substrate with hot liquid asphalt. Some volatile oils will be on the surface and with time disappear, i.e.; aged. GacoRoof coating will adhere to aged Built-Up Roofs. Asphalt coatings include asphalt emulsion, (Water Base), aluminized and cut-back, (Solvent Base). These coatings are usually applied over older BUR roofs. None of these coatings have dependable long term adhesion to BUR and frequently chip or peel off after several years of service. It is the possibility of poor adhesion of these asphalt coatings that make them risky to coat with GacoRoof. Technical Specs: GACOROOF SINGLE COMPONENT SILICONE COATING Description: GacoRoof is a single component elastomeric air dry silicone rubber coating that can be applied year round on properly prepared substrates. GacoRoof has a high level of reflectivity. Usage: GacoRoof is designed as a protective roof coating where ponding water is a problem. APPLICATION Primer: None normally required. Mixing: Mix before application to assure uniform color and consistency. Application: Apply by brush or roller as received. Cold weather application requires material to be stored above 65°F (18°C). This will allow for easier spreading of material. If left longer than 72 hours between coats, GacoRoof must be cleaned and allowed to dry completely before proceeding. Clean Up: Mineral Spirits Cure: Applied coating will cure in 3 to 7 hour depending on temperature and humidity. Caution: GacoRoof contains solvent and is combustible. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors and prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only with adequate ventilation. Extended Information: Surface Preparation: Remove all loose material and debris. Wash the roof, paying special attention to heavily soiled areas. The surface must be completely dry before applying GacoRoof. Caulk holes with silicone caulk; allow caulk to dry according to manufacturer’s instructions. Check flashings and transitions, then bridge openings (cracks, seams, laps, drains, skylights, scuppers, etc.) with Gaco RoofTape self-adhesive seam tape. Application Each five-gallon pail contains enough roof coating for 250 square feet when two coats are applied. Remove all loose material and debris. Pressure wash the roof with alkaline soap, paying special attention to heavily soiled areas. The surface must be completely dry before applying GacoRoof. Caulk holes and cracks with silicone caulk; allow caulk to dry according to manufacturer instructions. Check flashings and transitions, then bridge openings (cracks, seams, laps, drains, skylights, scuppers, etc.) with Gaco RoofTape. Using a power drill and a paint mixer attachment, stir GacoRoof coating thoroughly for 3-5 minutes. DO NOT use a paint shaker. Use a solvent-resistant 3/4” or 1” nap roller to apply one gallon of GacoRoof per 100 square feet of roof. Allow the first coat to dry until it can be walked on — between 1 and 12 hours. Apply second coat at one gallon per 100 square feet and allow the roof to dry. Keep container tightly closed between applications to minimize surface skinning. If surface skins, remove the skinned material from the container. GacoRoof should not be applied in temperatures below freezing, or when rain is expected within 2 hours. Clean Up Clean equipment with mineral spirits. DO NOT use water. Dispose of GacoRoof coating in the proper manner. Maintenance Roof structures may settle over time. A periodic inspection of your roof, which includes transition areas, flashing, vents and skylights, is recommended. Do not recoat GacoRoof Silicone coating with acrylic, urethane, or Hypalon® coatings. CAUTION: An old, neglected, or failing roof does not have the resilience to withstand the rigors of weather. Gaco is a miracle coating! October 25, 2012 Reviewer: Charles W. from USA   I used the Gaco Roof coating on my flat roof that was leaking on and off for years. They would fix it and it would leak again so I decided to do it myself and use the Gaco. What a good decision on my part. I followed the instructions for two coats applied at a 90 degree angle and not a leak in over a year! Even after that terrible storm that hit the northeast with all that rain, not a drop. I would highly recommend this product and it's very easy to apply. I bought it here because they are lower in price than anybody around by far and their customer service is very helpful.
