Cabot Weathering Stain

Cabot Weathering Stain Silver Gray is a deep penetrating, oil-based stain that beautifies and protects exterior wood. This lightly pigmented stain will create an immediate natural silver gray "weathered" look while allowing the grain, texture and color variations within the wood to show through. This stain is water repellent and when properly applied will not crack, peel or blister.

Features:
  • Coverage
  • On smooth surfaces, approximately 400-600 square feet per gallon; on rough surfaces, 150-300 square feet per gallon. These rates will vary depending upon the porosity of the surface.

  • Where to Use
  • Weathering Stain is for use on exterior wood siding, shingles, shakes, fences, log homes and roofs. It is especially effective on rough-sawn surfaces and excellent results are obtained on premium grade lumber such as cedar, fir, pine, cypress, spruce, redwood and plywood panel siding.

  • Preparing the Surface
  • The durability of this product can be impaired by an unsound or poorly prepared surface. Clean the surface of all dirt, mildew stains, loose wood fibers and other foreign matter. Surfaces must be structurally sound and absolutely dry. (Moisture content must be below 15 percent, or wood must be exposed to dry weather a minimum of 3 to 5 days.) In order to be effective, a stain must be able to penetrate. Use Cabot Problem-Solver Strippers (8004 & 8005) to safely remove all stains and paints from wood surfaces. Use Cabot Problem-Solver Wood Brightener to easily remove nail and metal rust stains, and renew the wood's appearance. New smooth wood that is unseasoned or appears shiny should be allowed to weather sufficiently before staining, but generally no longer than three months.

  • Dry Time
  • Allow at least 24-48 hours of drying time before applying second coat.

  • Lead Warning
  • Warning! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean-up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log onto www.epa.gov/lead Solvent Based Paints need to include Danger! Rags.

  • Cleanup and Disposal
  • Oil-based Products: Clean brushes and equipment with mineral spirits. Dispose of empty cans or unused portion in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Close container when not in use. Danger: Rags, steel wool or waste soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after each use, place rags, steel wool or waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
